The multiple instances of the supernatural in this book are imaginative and effective, creating tales within themselves that are as thrilling as any old-fashioned pulp story. I especially loved the cameos from other characters familiar to anyone who has read actual stories from that time period.
The relationship between Simon and Robert is sexy and quietly adoring. Not all relationships need hearts and flowers, and Charles does a great job of showing how committed the men are without the trappings of romance.
No spoilers here, but the ending is incredibly poignant. There are many types of happily ever afters, and Charles picked the perfect one here.
