Review: The Sumage Solution (San Andreas Shifters #1) by G.L. Carriger

Sumage SolutionPart of me is kicking myself for letting this book sit unread on my Kindle for so long. The rest of me thinks there must have been a method to my madness, because now I only have an agonizing 2 weeks to wait until the sequel is released. Luckily, I have a prequel short story to read to tide me over for about 10 minutes until then.

If you enjoy both urban fantasy and contemporary M/M romance, this book is not to be missed. It melds all of the detailed world-building that I’ve previously enjoyed in Carriger’s work with a delightful romance – all including her excellent ability to create characters so detailed that even secondary and tertiary characters leap off the page in full technicolor.

I really did expect this book to be a standard romance with some supernatural stuff thrown in. That is definitely what a significant portion, and plot, of the book is about. To my surprise and enjoyment, the book also included a significant subplot that brought everything to life and made the romance deeper and even more special.

If I have one (minor) quibble, I might have enjoyed a bit more detailed backstory to how the magic in this world operates. Unfortunately, that’s hard to do when all of the characters already know how everything works, and rehashing things just for the reader would have felt off (and then I’d have been complaining about “info-dumping” in this review instead). I shall have to content myself to looking forward to other tales set in this universe instead.

Rating: 5 (out of 5) stars. Cross-posted to Amazon and Goodreads.
