Review: Abaddon’s Gate (The Expanse #3) by James S.A. Corey

This series was perfect vacation reading, and I’m now caught up the first three seasons of the television show, which is all that has been released at the time of this writing. For a series that was supposed to be about “the little guys” who happen to get involved in solar system-spanning action, it seems like the little guys are awfully involved in what’s going on.

As much as I love Anna and Holden, and loved to hate one of the primary villains whose POV we get to see, I felt a little let down by the loss of Bobbie and Avasarala in this installment. The show does an excellent job of winding great characters into the main action that I missed here, and I’m especially okay with their decision to let a woman of color take on most of the role that Bull serves in the text.

In the grander scheme of things, the events that lead to the novel’s epic conclusion show that however much of a rift the presence and effect of the alien protomolecule puts in things, humanity’s greatest enemy will always be itself. I’m counting down the days until season 4 of The Expanse, and I’m already reading the next book in the series.
