My husband has been on a kick for graphic novels written by women, and I’ve been on a kick for diversity representation in speculative fiction, so this was a delightful find for both of us.

I’m not familiar with any incarnation of this Marvel hero, but I was easily absorbed into the story line. I am a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but all of the movie plots are so larger-than-life that it was nice to experience an origin story that was more rooted in reality. This was like any other female coming-of-age story, involving family and friend drama. Just with a little something extra, in the form of super powers.

The artwork was a little cartoony for me. I adore the cover of this volume, and after seeing it spread around online so much, I think that art style was what I expected. On the other hand, the interior style definitely presented Kamala’s abilities to good effect.
