Fashionable IndulgenceKind words must be said about any book that teaches me about both early nineteenth century men’s fashion AND political history. Obviously, the two are not mutually exclusive.

Harry is a charming character who is thrust into a very difficult position. Most of his success can be laid at the feet of Julius, an intriguing dandy with a deep history that was a delight to uncover as the pages turned. The family politics of money and the weight of a name prompted most of the drama, but all of the characters were sufficiently three-dimensional for their purposes.

Since this is the start of a series, I look forward to reading more about all of the characters. These books took place in a slightly earlier time period than I’m used to reading, so it’s been a nice change of pace, with new things to discover.

(For example, I now know what color “puce” is. And it is exceedingly relevant.)
