It seems so long ago that we accompanied Max through her own training process. How things have flipped, as on the heels of a partial knee replacement, Max is on “light” duty as the new Chief Training Officer. Her five trainees are all well fleshed-out characters that I couldn’t help but root for.
My biggest disappointment with this novel was personal in nature and in no way diminishes the quality of the book. I was so excited by the prospect of information about this universe’s future America, especially when the character in question grew more and more suspicious. However, this information does not come to pass as a new mystery about possible foes to St. Mary’s emerges instead.
In addition, a final mystery left over from previous books is finally solved. Rather than treating the revelation as a final piece of the puzzle, Taylor delves into the duality of human nature with a depth that you might not expect in a comedic adventure series.
I can’t wait to find out more about the new villain(s) in this series, especially since Max’s life is about to be turned upside down once again.
