I am on a roll with NaNoWriMo this year! Tonight I hit 16,000 words (36,000 total for the manuscript), and I’ve been consistently writing every day. The only exception has been 11/7, because that’s my husband’s birthday–instead, we had a great day watching the new James Bond movie and eating delicious Brasilian pizza.

If you’re also participating in NaNoWriMo and want to add me as a buddy, or if you just want to stalk my progress and yell at me if I fall behind, you can find my daily updated word count here.

Check out a short (very rough, very unedited) passage from book 3, STEEL BLOOD, that I’ve written in the past week after the jump.

“Everything is different now,” Victory said. “I used to live for the job. Everything was by the contract. Even consideration for Asaron or my progeny was second tier after that. But now…now I have a family instead.” She laughed, and the sound was harsh in their small, dark room. “Now I have a whole damn city. And the life and drama of one woman is petty compared with all that.”

“So what are you going to do?” Mikelos asked.

“Abide by the contract,” Victory said. “Make it through this. So we can go home.”

“The concert is tomorrow night,” Mikelos said. “How much would it cost you to break the contract so we can just bail?”

Break a contract? Perish the thought. However tempting the idea was at this particular moment. “Not much, in the grand scheme of things,” Victory said. “But I’m still technically a member of the Mercenary Guild. That sort of thing goes on your record, and it affects how much you can charge later.”

“But you’re not a mercenary anymore,” Mikelos said. He got up and began changing for bed, not meeting her eyes.

“Am I?” Victory propped herself up on her elbows and watched him. “What the hell am I doing here, then?”

“Reliving your youth? Distracting yourself from worrying about Toria and Kane?” Mikelos threw up his hands, shirt hanging unbuttoned. “Pick one!”

They stared at each other for a beat, before Mikelos turned away to hang up his shirt.

“Do you think that my life with you has just been some sort of vacation?” Victory asked, her voice low. “That being the Master of Limani was just something to keep me occupied before I took off again?”

And psst…check back here tomorrow from some amazing news that I will finally get to share!
